Grand Total

Blogging every thirty minutes for 24 hours straight in Blogathon 2007 equals

Yay to my 23 sponsors! And Yay to the people who supported me in the comments!

There is still a little time before the sponsorships officially close. But I was so excited about who is going to win in the sponsor drawing, that I went ahead and put everyone’s name into my big green bowl…

after_teganchose7.jpg

I tried to convince Tegan to pick the winners… but she says Everyone who donates to Peaceful Prairie is a winner!!!

laugh, I  explained to her that we can’t give all the sponsors tee shirts or tote bags (sorry!).

The winners are Alhena and Lee P. YAY!!! Also the first person to sponsor me, Laloofah, gets a teeshirt as well!

ALL sponsors who are interested in receiving a newsletter and bumper sticker from Peaceful Prairie, just let me know and we’ll get you on the mailing list!

AND, for any of my sponsors who are animal activists: you may request up to 200 FREE leaflets from Peaceful Prairie! You can mix and match from their five different pamphlets listed at The Prairie Press.

Thank you again, everyone! This has been such a great experience and I am just thrilled at the outcome!

47: bad

Yeah, it’s getting tougher. I’m sure there are plenty of things to type about. I just … well, I was going to say I just don’t care any more. But that’s not it. It’s more like my brain wants to simplify everything down:

  • Dog fighting: bad.
  • That guy what’s his name: evil.
  • Rooster fighting: bad.
  • People who do that: evil.
  • Everyone knows these things are bad and the people who do them are evil.
  • But then if they have to do something about the dogs and their people… then they will definitely have to do something about the roosters as well… and oh, we eat those ones, don’t we? hm, that ain’t gonna work.

46: Me towards the end

 0430_me.jpg

Tough to take a pic that doesn’t make me look horribly hideous!  ha.  Me, wrapped up in my blanket with the little fan in the window behind me.

And sunrise doesn’t occur until… 5:57am.

And I seriously need to reboot.  I’m amazed at how well my computer has held up. ‘course I did a bit of coddling to accommodate it’s lack of RAM.  But still!

Current Conditions: Overcast 59°F  (15°C) humidity 88%

45: um!

SO says “Think globally act locally. Be the good example.”

:)

I say. Why isn’t everybody vegan yet?

44: In Memory Of

I would like to take this 30 minutes to remember Virgil Butler. He was The Cyberactivist, the guy who worked as a killer in a chicken slaughter house. and then turned it all around, went vegan and became an animal activist and rescued chickens (and dogs and cats…).

He died this past December.

His partner is taking care of the animals. She is having a hard time. They were soul mates.

43: “Extreme”

People think that being vegan is “extreme”. When I was vegetarian, I used to think that.

Now that I am vegan, it’s the other way around. I see the extreme suffering caused by meat eaters. I see the astronomical numbers of animals killed every year. I see the devastating effect on the environment that using animals for food has. That’s extreme.

I eat vegetables. What’s extreme about that, again?

Current conditions: Overcast 60°F (16°C) humidity 86%

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level: oh, hey, SO is still awake and calling out the time!

42: and Fiction

I am usually go for science fiction when reading novels, but there’s also a fantasy sub-genre that I love called Animal Fiction. This is where the animals tell the story. Watership Down. Wind in the Williows.

One book from this genre definitely fits into my vegan theme. Richard Adam’s _Plague Dogs_, a story about two dogs who escape from an animal testing lab. It’s heart wrenching, especially knowing this book was written in1977 and there are still animal testing labs doing the exact same things to dogs and so many other animals.

Go Vegan, and don’t use products tested on animals!

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level: SO was calling out at the half hours, telling me to post. That was nice. But now he’s in bed again because he has work to goto tomorrow.

41: 2am… books

bks_annonfic.gif
So, that’s my list of books in the Animal, non fiction section.

Okay, lets see.

_Kinship With All Life_ is a tiny book by J. Allen Boone about a guy who takes the time to talk to animals. Brilliant!

_Living on the Edge_ is by Jeff Corwin, and I’ve blogged about him and his annoying non-vegetarian stupidities. But the book is good with great photos.

Oh! _Intro to Animal Rights_ is by Gary Francione (of Animal Rights: The Abolitionist Approach ) excellent book, and I’ve got his other book _Thunder_ in my pile: to be read.

_Unnatural Order_ was another good one. Jim Mason.

Current conditions:   Overcast 61°F (16°C) humidity 83% and now I’m wrapped up in a blanket with the fan still blowing at me.

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level:  um.  Feeling “unnaturally” good.  So I’m drinking a soda so I can crash and feel crappy in a little while.  ha!

40: Magic Chocolate Cake

I got this recipe off the Internet… and hey, I found it right away at the Compassionate Cooks site. Which is Peaceful Prairie Approved! Really!!

Magic Chocolate Cake

I’ve never made the frosting because I’m lazy like that. And I’ve never had peppermint around either, it’s optional but I imagine that would just increase the yum yum.

Current conditions:  Fair 58°F (14°C) humidity 87% the cool air blowing behind me still feels good.  But 87%? Where is all that water coming from??

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level:   I wish I had some cake.

39: Other Annoyances

Don’t worry, I’m not going to offend anyone this time. Unless you test things on animals or find new ways to put dead animals in to things.  In that case: you suck.

Animal products are pervasive. We’ve been using them for so long and they are so cheap, dead animals can be found almost everywhere.

The carpet is made of wool, the glue that holds the wood of furniture and your house together is animal based. Certain plastics. There are bits of animals in rubber tires and in the road you roll on. Before there were crash test dummys there were pigs in the cars they intentionally crashed.

The meds you have to take were tested on animals or cultured/whatever in eggs.

There is no such thing as a 100% pure vegan. Animal products are everywhere.

And people try to use this as an excuse to not be vegan: Since we can’t be 100%, why bother trying. Because we have to live in a house somehow means it’s doesn’t matter if we eat meat or not?

No! We do the best we can. We eat vegan and everything else we can do is like vegan icing on the vegan cake.
Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level: oh yeah, I keep forgetting about that chocolate cake recipe…

38: random bloggy things

It’s just after midnight here as I’m typing this. And I’m wondering a few things.

Will I ever be able to sleep again?

Later this week will I come up with some vegan thought and think “Oh, I could have used that for Blogathon.”

The other Blogathoners that I am attempting to keep up with:

Shambhala blogging for the American Himalayan Foundation. Laloofah loves to type about the stuff her charity is doing, and they are doing a lot. And in between, she’s got a great sense of humor. Stop by and consider sponsoring her!

spectavi blogging for the Tibetan Nuns Project. She’s got the poetry thing Going with a capital G. It’s great, and I’m enjoying it. Tho I haven’t gotten my notebook out to crack her code. ;) Think about sponsoring her!

The Blogathon front page. They had a self portrait thing going, which amused me for a few minutes. And some pretty good poetry.

Current conditions: Fair 61°F (16°C) humidity 81%

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level: whats vegan about that?

37: Yay Sponsors!

I’ve gotten a couple more sponsors as I’ve been typing today… and I’m now over the 500$ mark!  My sponsors are the awesome-ist!

Thank you so much, everyone.

And hey, if you haven’t joined the party yet, you can sponsor me too!

You’ll be donating directly to Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary.

pic_goats.jpg

36: Classical Reading

And now I’ve moved on to singing with Les Mis. And actually, it’s kind of hard to type one thing and sing another.

And it’s got me thinking about classical books. I’ve not read the book by Victor Hugo, yet. And that has nothing to do with vegans.

But The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a classic that does. It’s the story of a family of immigrants, come to America for the american dream. Except they get stuck working in a slaughter house.

The slaughter house scenes, were taken from life, and believe me, it’s amazing that anyone who ate meat lived through it. And soldiers got the worst of the worst, and many of them died of food poisoning instead of war.

This book outraged people and laws were passed to clean up slaughter house practices. But not much has changed for the people who have to work there. It’s still high turn-over, and highly dangerous.

Go Vegan.

35: More Chocolate

Chocolate Decadence.  Yeah.  This is a local company that makes vegan chocolate.

Did I mention local?  And I’ve not had any yet?  This is a tragedy deserving of a decent vegan rant.

34: pissed off vegan

Meat is not food.

Meat is a dead animal that should be buried.

And don’t you know that milk is for babies.

Everyone else out grows milk.

and stealing eggs? how childish is that?

But it’s all big business now. Taken to the extreme. Billions of animals tortured and killed every year. Do you even know what a billion is? A billion seconds is about 32 years.

33: Vegan Pet Peeves

Okay, it’ll be 10pm Pacific time when I post this. The kids have gone to bed, right?

Time for vegan annoyances. Prepare to be offended.

I tell them I’m vegan, no animal products, blah blah.

They say: Don’t you Have To milk cows or they will explode?

um. no. cows do not explode. Do you people even think before you open your mouth? Just wondering. Here, I’ve done the hard work of thinking for you:

Just like humans, cows have to get pregnant and have a baby in order to make milk. The milk is meant for baby, but we take the calf away when he or she is about 24 hours old. Just like humans, if there is no one drinking her milk, she will eventually dry up. No exploding, right. But she doesn’t dry up because we are stealing her milk.

Current Conditions: Fair 67°F (19°C) humidity 63%

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level:   Ranting a little?  Yeah okay.  So much for the cheerful and happy posts of yester-hour.

32: More Vegan Music!

Yeah, so I’m over here, listening to random songs because the thoughts coming through my brain are  getting mushy.

SO brings me out to hear a song he loves which he just discovered was remixed by moby.

Yep, it’s a good song. And I ask to borrow SO’s disc of Play by moby.  It’s got “South Side” on it as well that “Porcelain” song. He said he’d look for it.

He comes back at me with “Good news and bad news” I say I don’t want the bad news, I can’t handle it.  ;)

And the bad news was he couldn’t find Play.

But he did find moby’s Animal Rights CD.

Did you see my jaw drop?!  haha.

The first song is standard ambient moby.  Ambient.  is that the right word?  anyway.  I’m on song 4 and they are rather punkish.  Not bad!

And I probably shouldn’t type his two paragraph blurb on the jacket about animal rights.  Copyright and all, you know.  I’ll see if I can find a link online tho… um nope, it’s not on his website.  The gist:

we need to finally accept that all sentient creatures are deserving of basic rights.  i define basic rights as this — the ability to pursue life without having someone else’s will involuntarily forced upon you… “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”

i call upon you to be compassionate and treat others as you want to be treated.  if you don’t want to be beaten, imprisoned, mutilated, killed or tortured then you shouldn’t condone such behaviour towards anyone, be they human or not.

Yeah moby!  might I add: raped, criminally neglected and abused without a thought, to that list.

31: Certified Vegan

vegancert1.gif

I mentioned that I love it when I see this seal, certified vegan.

I buy my share of vege burgers because cooking is such a pain. Much easier to nuke a vege burger.

I do read labels, been doing it for a while now ;) … check the “Cholest.” equals zero. They’ve been getting better about the allergen list. Still check the small print ingredient list tho… Because “Non-dairy” actually has a milk ingredient in it.

But when I see that tiny “V” usually hidden in some random corner on the back. Yay!

Current conditions:  Fair 70°F (21°C) humidity 61%

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level:   Now SO is talking music at me!

30: sunlight ending

Sunset is not too far off, at 8:42… just a little while after I get this posted. There’s a fan blowing in the outside air at my back and it’s starting to get cooler. The temperature in my room is right at 80, outside temp currently at 76 and the humidity is climbing back up again.

…Not sayin’ a nap would be nice or anything. I got about 3 hours of sleep last night because I was so excited about Blogathon. I’m sayin’ I could use 10 hours of sleep right now! laughs.

I’ve pulled out the music. um non-vegan music to keep me going. Some Garbage, Evanescence, and now some Michelle Branch to sing along with, “Sweet Misery” yep. Les Mis is a good one to sing along with as well, “But the tigers come at night…”

oh, and um, what was that one. ah, Eve 6 “Inside Out” … got it out. Oh geez, the lyrics! “The tick tock of the clock is painful, all sane and logical. I want to tear it off the wall.”

bahaha!

29: chocolate

Endangered Species Chocolate.  I love that little “certified vegan” seal.  A lot of their dark chocolates have fruity things in them, which I don’t particularly care for.  But the Tiger bar, dark choc with expresso beans is total yum.

SO got me the Bat bar today, Intense dark chocolate with cocoa nibs.  mmm… :D

Careful tho, they have some evil milk chocolates too. bah.

28: SO buying spree

Yeah, not only did he get Tegan some oranges and me some chocolate and some kind of energy drink…

He also got me some furniture. In the form of a new bean bag. Yeah, if you couldn’t tell from my keyboard being at Tegan level… I hate chairs and such. And with Tegan’s house taking up most of the room in my bedroom, yeah I just can’t be bothered with real furniture.

But now I’m all draped over my new bean bag, which is probably going to kill the environment with all the styrofoam filling, but might do my back some good to be in a new position.

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level: um. Chocolate!

27: Crafty Concerns

I craft even less often than I draw.  But occasionally inspiration strikes.

As a vegan, there are certain supplies that I’m not going to buy. Leather bits, animal yarns, feathers, felt.

Glue is a big one.  But I’m very allergic to the fumes that come off animal glues, so I just learned to live without any glue, not wanting the anguish involved.  Then I found out that Elmers white glue is not animal-based anymore, even with that cow on the bottle.  It’s made entirely of  synthetic materials.  And I’ve used it without any problems.

In general “paste” is plant based, but don’t get Yes! Paste.  I wrote them and I think it was glycerin that was from dead animals.  bleh.

That’s okay, we can make our own Wheat Paste!  ha.  Yeah, I’ve never been desperate enough to … um _Crafty_ enough to do this, but it’s there.

Bloggy Style Enthusiasm Level:  hm.  Back is starting to ache, I’m surprised it’s taken this long considering the crazy work week I’ve had.  Do I reach for the pain pills to head it off, or do I keep them in the trenches?

26: small scribbles

icon_leafshadows.jpg

I was going to trim this down a bit and use it as my LeafShadows avatar.  But I never got around to it.  eh.  It’s a scribble from my journal, coloured pencils and ink.

And anyway.  I haven’t done much typing about the books I read.  My thought was to save something interesting for the middle of the night.  But I’m not sure if I’ll be coherent enough for more than a list!
